Adaptive scheduling in DOCSIS-based CATV networks

چکیده
This paper studies the effect of the DOCSIS MAC layer on the performance of two-way TCP transfers in Hybrid Fiber Coax (HFC) networks. We propose a new adaptive scheduling scheme called Long Packet Deferment (LPD) at the headend to improve TCP performance in DOCSIS-based HFC networks. LPD reduces the frequency of transmission of long packets and, if such long packets are transmitted, they are scheduled towards the end of each transmission period. Thus, it allows the system to behave as in a symmetric network earlier, reduces the round trip delay of sending data packets, and improves the aggregate downstream throughput. We have conducted simulations using network simulator ns-2 to compare the simple first-come-first-served scheduling of DOCSIS and IEEE 802.14 like mechanism with LPD. The results show that LPD has better performance in terms of higher aggregate downstream throughput and shorter access delay.

An Adaptive Contention Period Control in HFC Networks
As the deployment of the cable TV (CATV) network becomes ubiquitous, the CATV networks have emerged as one of primary technologies to provide broadband access to the home. Due to the natural of CATV networkthe radical asymmetric bandwidth, the upstream channel is critical to allocating and scheduling. The objective of this paper is to propose a new adaptive contention period control algorithm i...

The Data Over Cable Service Interface Specifications (DOCSIS) is intended to support IP flows over HFC (Hybrid Fiber/Coax) networks with significantly higher data rates than analog modems and Integrated Service Digital Network (ISDN) links for high quality audio, video and interactive services. To support quality-of-service (QoS) for such applications, it is important for HFC networks to provid...

The goal of an UHDTV is to broadcast digital video contents which is 16 times the pixel resolution of HDTV. As the resolution is increased, the UHDTV requires a transmission technology to support very high data transfer rate. In this paper, we propose two out-of-band protocols to transmit UHDTV contents in a CATV network: an OOB-based protocol and a DSG-based protocol. The former may be a short...
